My First Day Driving for A-1 Courier.

A New Driver’s First Day on the Road in Los Angeles

At A-1 Courier, we have been running same-day courier service in Los Angeles for decades, and we are only ever as good as the drivers behind the wheel. So when Vincent finished his very first shift with us and had a lot to say about it, we asked him to write it down. Here is his first day, in his own words.

Snapped this one on the 110 today. Not a bad view from the office.

My name is Vincent, and I just wrapped up my first day driving for A-1 Courier. I have driven for another courier service before, so I figured I knew what I was walking into. I was wrong. By the end of the day I was telling my wife it was the easiest and most enjoyable shift I have ever put in behind the wheel. A-1 asked if I would share my thoughts on the day, so here they are.

My first assignment came in as a rush pickup downtown. At my old job, a rush order was when the stress started. Where is the building, where do I park, am I even going the right way. This time the job popped up on the app, I tapped it, and everything I needed was right there. Pickup address, delivery address, contact name, special instructions. I hit start and the app dropped me straight into navigation. I grabbed the package, it logged the pickup, and I was off to the drop. A signature at the door, a tap on the screen, and dispatch could see it was delivered in real time. No phone tag, no wondering if the office knew the job was done. That first run set the tone for the whole day.

Two stops on the board and the app already had my route figured out.

The app honestly did the thinking for me. At my old company I spent half my brain power just figuring out whether I was headed north, south, east, or west, and the other half second-guessing the address. With A-1 I never had to think about direction at all. Each stop handed off straight to Google Maps and I just followed it. What made it even better is that Google recently sharpened up their maps to show the actual buildings and houses, so the numbers on the screen matched the numbers on the doors. I cannot tell you how much time that saves. No circling the block, no squinting at a strip mall looking for a suite. I could relax, put on some music, and let the navigation do its job. For the first time, driving felt calm.

The dispatchers were great from the first stop to the last. Most of our back and forth happened on Slack, which I had never used before. I figured it would be one more thing to learn, but it turned out to be fantastic. Quick messages, everything in one place, no missed calls. Within an hour it felt natural. When I did need to pick up the phone, the dispatchers were helpful and kind. Nobody was rushed or short with me, even though I was the new guy asking new-guy questions. That matters more than people realize. A good dispatcher can make or break a driver’s day, and these folks clearly know what they are doing.

The training was simple and just enough to get me going. It was about as easy as the app itself, which tells you they have refined their system over a lot of years. I did not leave feeling overwhelmed. I left feeling ready, and by my second or third run I was moving like I had been doing this for months.

I also loved seeing so many different corners of the city. I had a run out to the San Fernando Valley that I really enjoyed. It was a lot hotter out there than the West Side, and honestly I liked that too. From downtown to the Valley to the West Side, every part of Los Angeles has its own feel and its own timing, and I got a taste of a lot of them in one shift. You learn the city fast in this job.

What really impressed me was the range of clients. In a single day I made deliveries for the garment industry, interior designers, a medical office, architects, and even a little legal work. There were a lot of creatives in the mix too. A few of my runs were gifts a customer was sending to someone, which was a nice thing to be part of. You feel good handing that off. These are real professionals who count on A-1 to represent them well at the door, and after one day I understand why they keep coming back.

If my first day is any sign of what is ahead, I am in the right place. The technology takes the stress out of the driving, the dispatchers have your back, and the work itself is genuinely interesting. I am already looking forward to day two.

A note from A-1 Courier management: Vincent wrote this after his first shift and agreed to let us share it. We edited it only lightly for length. If you drive the way he does and want to find out what a first day here feels like for yourself, reach out through our contact page. We are always glad to hear from good drivers.
