What Happens When You Place an Order With A-1 Courier
You submit a pickup request and then what? For a lot of businesses, that’s where the mystery begins. The package goes in, something happens behind the scenes, and eventually someone shows up. Maybe on time, maybe not. Maybe with a call ahead, maybe not.
We think you should know exactly what happens after you place an order with A-1 Courier. Not because transparency is a buzzword, but because when you’re sending a patient’s lab specimen to a processing facility, or a set of executed contracts to a closing table, the last thing you need is a black box.
Here’s how it actually works.
You Place the Order
You have options. You can call us directly, send an order by email, or place it yourself through our online ordering portal. However it comes in, it lands in the same place: our dispatch system, logged and ready to route.
When you order, you tell us where the package is being picked up, where it’s going, and which service level you need: Regular (3 to 4 hours), Rush (1 to 2 hours), or Non-Stop, which means a dedicated driver goes directly from your door to the destination without any other stops.
That last detail matters more than it sounds. Non-Stop isn’t just faster. It’s a fundamentally different kind of service. The driver who picks up your package is the same driver who delivers it, and nothing else goes in that vehicle. For time-sensitive medical samples or legal documents, that’s not a premium option. It’s the right call.
Dispatch Takes Over
Once your order is in the system, dispatch goes to work. And this is where most people assume there’s some version of “nearest driver gets the ping.” That’s not what happens here.
Our dispatcher looks at a set of real variables for every single job: where the pickup is, where it’s delivering, when it needs to be picked up, when it needs to be delivered, the size of the package, and what vehicle the job requires. A document pouch and a pallet of medical equipment don’t get routed the same way, and they shouldn’t.

The dispatch software we use was purpose-built for this industry. One of its most important features is real-time traffic routing — not estimated drive times based on mileage, but live traffic data integrated directly into the dispatch decision. When you’re promising a same-day delivery in a specific window, you need to know what the roads are actually doing right now, not what they do on an average Tuesday.
The system gives our dispatcher two primary routing options. One finds the driver best suited to the job based on overall efficiency — what we call “least deviation,” meaning the driver whose existing route is least disrupted by taking this job. The other finds the closest driver to the pickup. The dispatcher looks at both, applies the judgment that comes from years of running Los Angeles routes, and makes the call.
The software surfaces the options. The dispatcher decides.
The Driver Gets the Job
The moment dispatch assigns the order, the driver’s phone alerts them. They see the full job details: pickup address, delivery address, contact information, timing, package specs, any instructions you included. They press navigate, and GPS routes them to your door.
When they arrive at the pickup location, they press arrive in the app, and if you’ve opted into email notifications, you get one right then. The driver is there.
They photograph the package before they pick it up. This isn’t optional and it isn’t ceremonial. It’s documentation. It captures the condition of the package at the moment of pickup, which protects you and protects us.
Then they press pickup, press navigate, and they’re on their way to the delivery.
In Transit
At this point you’re not wondering where your package is. You’re watching it. Once the driver is en route to the delivery, you receive an email confirmation that the driver has picked up and is on the way, along with a live tracking link so you can follow the driver in real time.
You can also call us. When you reach A-1 Courier, you reach someone who can actually tell you where your order stands. We’re not routing you to a chat widget or asking you to refresh a portal. Dispatch is watching active jobs, communicating with drivers, and able to answer a specific question about your specific delivery. That’s been true since long before tracking links existed, and it’s still true now.
Delivery
The driver arrives at the destination. They photograph the delivery, just as they did at pickup. They obtain a signature. Then you receive an email confirming the delivery is complete.
For medical clients, every step of that chain is handled in accordance with HIPAA requirements. For legal clients, the driver understands that the documents they’re carrying often have hard deadlines, filing windows, closing times, and cutoffs that don’t negotiate. The documentation built into every job supports that level of accountability.
Shortly after the delivery confirmation, you receive a final email with the invoice and total. The job is closed, documented from first photograph to last.
Why This Process Works
It works because every element of it is built around accountability rather than convenience. Convenience-first courier services are optimized to make placing an order easy. We’re optimized to make sure the order gets there, on time, documented, and handled correctly from start to finish.
The driver is an employee, not a contractor. The dispatcher is experienced, not passive. The software is purpose-built for this industry, not adapted from something else. The documentation, photographs, signatures, email confirmations, and delivery receipts — none of it is optional. It’s standard.
